A proper lookout is one of the simplest safeguards on board, but it only works when people are briefed well, know what to watch for and feel confident acting on what they see. This card gives crews and officers a practical, plain-spoken guide to bridge lookout duties, covering: familiarisation; equipment; watchkeeping discipline; emergency actions; and, handover. With proper preparation, new or inexperienced crew can contribute safely from the start.
Read the card and use it to brief the watch clearly.
Remember, you always have the right to put your own safety and the safety of others first.
If it looks unsafe, stop. Small actions can prevent great harm.
If you have concerns or want to share lessons learned you can do that confidentially through CHIRP, so others can benefit too.
